Since we took most of 2007 OFF from doing gigs we figured we would come out gangbusters in 2008!! If you haven't seen us in awhile, not much has really changed. We're all fatter, balder (?) and OLDER ! (except "the CUZ" of course - he never ages) We're planning ahead by adding to our list of songs preparing for the big 60 so we can do 60 songs in a night to top our 50 songs in a night from last year. Most likely our back to back nights at the ZIM City legion we will pretty much try to play everything we know so BOTH nights will have the potential for being a train wreck !!! (ha) It's a bit of a drive to the ZIM City Legion but everytime we play there something bizarre seems to occur!

"Southern Minnesota Where I Come From"
This the Red Rock Center in Fairmont where the benefit was held. Most everything except the weather seemed to go as planned. There were nasty winter weather warnings and lots of blowing snow and ice, but hey this is Minnesota so that is to be expected. Mark and Karyn were able to make the journey from Duluth which put a lot of smiles on peoples faces. If you didn't already know these pics are Bedford, Karyn and Warren. We have a few more pics from the benefit. There are SO MANY people who helped plan this event or who attended. Regretfully we don't have pics of everyone! Not sure exactly how much money was raised but heard the goal was $20,000. Thanks Fairmont for being there!

"Benefi for Bedfi"
Lonzo here...
On Saturday December 1st, 2007 there will be a benefit for close friend and Fairmont native Mark Nelson at the Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont. Mark answers to many unique monikers including Pete, Stive, Bedford and many more. Mark has been battling colon cancer these last many months and assuredly this benefit will raise a few extra bucks to help defray some of the medical costs. Bedford and I go way back. We used to sit next to each other singing 2nd tenor in the Fairmont High School choir, sat next to each other many times in High School band and marched in many parades as trumpeter's. During our high school years Fairmont had two bands and one year as I recall we both were in the position of being either the "worst of the best" or "the best of the worst" meaning if we made the "A" band (Concert Band) we would be playing the third coronet parts and if we made the "B" band (everyone else) we would be first and second chair! Thanks to Bedford's urging I started playing the bass in 1987 after moving back to Minnesota from Arizona. Bedford, eBuzz, the High Bun, Chico Juan Lenardo and Lonzo would eventually evolve into the Jameson Drovers bluegrass band. The Drovers along with Warren Nelson and other special guests will provide music at the benefit. When it comes to remembering lyrics Bedford and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum. In the twenty some years I've been jamming with him and the Drovers I don't think I have EVER heard him screw up a lyric or forget a verse. I on the other hand can't seem to spit it out even when the words are right there on paper in front of me. Bedford also is famous for not only knowing the lyrics to some 500 songs he also has been known to play guitar, banjo or dobro for hours on end around a campfire, especially when travelling to some remote section of the globe with the "voyageurs" on their annual trek. When asked what his most memorable gig has been over the years he most certainly would say "any campfire". Bedford's musical influence on me personally is vast.
The benefit will be starting ast 5:00 PM with live music, silent auction, food and festivities.

Sinister - Fairmont VFW
Usually Lonzo would be spending the Friday night after Thanksgiving jamming with the Drovers at the Goose in Fairmont. This was to be the first year since, not sure, some time in the nineties that the Drovers would not be jamming, so it was an unusual "night off" during Thanksgiving weekend. As it turns out Sinister would be appearing at the Fairmont VFW that night. The band has changed a bit since the last time we blogged about them here. Founding member Tommie Bolster quit reportedly to pursue the dream of concocting original tunes. I've enjoyed the few times I've jammed with Tommie but a guy has to do what a guy has to do I guess. Recently another old acquintance Greg Heupel stepped in to fill the spot voided by Tommie on guitar. Greg is a great "guitar hero" and seemed to fit in nicely with the rest of the band. He's a rocker from way back including a stint in California. Rumour has it Greg is in at least two other local bands including the Pounders ?? Anyway check out the pics.
Sidewinders
So the 'Lords ended the year musically on a high note. Although our summer was pretty light as far as "gig schedule" it was exciting to play the "all new" Shortstop, the Halloween bash and finally our first ever appearence at Sidewinders in North St Paul. Sidewinders itself seems to have been there a long time and has a pretty regular steady crowd. You can't beat the load in / loud out. We took liberties and backed up right up on the sidewalk to a door (see above) that goes right onstage. That was awesome and made things pretty easy. We didn't seem to entice many dancers but the place was rockin ! It was good seeing Ian and his girlfriend Jessica. Tara, her husband and some friends from the Halloween bash were there. Tara was quick to point out that she was NOT dressed as Little Bo Peep on Halloween as previously reported, but the St Paulie Girl... Thanks Dawn for the video you recorded !
Sounds like we might get another gig at Sidewinders after the first of the year. We actually think '08 is going to be a great year gig wise. Our goal of course is once a month and if we do that we will be happy. We'd play more but we're just too busy. If you've been reading this blog you know we don't do this for the $$$, but we do get paid a bit. We usually each get $100 per gig which ends up being about ten bucks an hour since we start loading / travelling at 5:00 PM and get home at 3:00 AM. Our sweet spot for most regular gigs is we play around 40 songs which according to KINGER also computes to $2.50 for each song played. This became the joke of the night with every couple songs Kinger commenting "just made another 5 bucks" or "another half song and I can afford another beer" !! Speaking of beer, Sidewinders is one of those bars that you definately want to be sober when you leave and are expecting to drive as the North St Paul police seemed to be everywhere. Not that we drink that much but it is sure nice having Cuz as our designated driver just in case!

Tara's Halloween Bash 2007
We had a great time at Tara's 2007 Halloween bash.

Awesome. Tara works with Pete and she and her family co-hosted the bash. It was a bit of a grind working real jobs all day, hustling home, playing roadie, jamming and then well you know the rest.....getting home at 3:30 a.m. but WELL WORTH IT! There's something about Halloween and everyone getting into character that just can't be beat. The vibe for the band was awesome and what a change of pace as far as venue. We felt like we just stepped in to some bizarre Munster's / Adams Family meet the Twighlight Zone bit. We struggled some with the sound (high ceilings, marble floor, did I say MARBLE FLOOR! yes) and never really did nail the sound but at least it wasn't feed back. It's pretty interesting trying to play in costume as well. Have you ever fallen off 3 inch leopard skin platform shoes before ? I'm not sure how most rockers play with long hair, "Not So Hot Lava" 's fake long hair was everywhere it wasn't supposed to be at the wrong time. That's OK though, it distracted him from being pissed off at the cape being in the way. HA ! Andy looked perfectly FINE in his Buck Dharma meets Elvis costume.
